Today at Macworld, Sling Media announced that it’s developing a custom application, SlingPlayer Mobile for the Apple iPhone. While this appears to be just another application, the trend behind this announcement has been persistent in the industry for quite a while — media — anywhere, anytime. Sling Media is well known for developing the Slingbox and Slingcatcher devices that are designed to stream television programming to computers / mobile devices and vice-versa.
The iPhone is the perfect device for the new application for a few reasons:
- Portability: Given that it’s a phone, the screen size of the iPhone is ideal for watching video. Also, the application may smartly compress the file, to avoid any buffer issues.
- Connectivity: Given the requirement of an iPhone data plan and it’s constant connectivity, content on this device can truly be watched anywhere and and anytime.
