During the next few weeks, numerous companies will be presenting their ‘year in review’ reports. Today, Comscore published their “The 2009 U.S. Digital Year in Review” report. You may download the whitepaper for free by clicking here.

A few facts regarding online video:

  • Online video viewing is increasing. 2009 saw double-digit increases across nearly every category.
  • Hulu continues to grow in importance and viewership. Viewership increased by 140% in December 2009, compared to December 2008.

Overall conclusions:

The economy in 2009 made it a difficult market for online businesses. However, despite this impact, consumption of online video increased, signaling that the market is still untapped. With the return of the e-commerce market in 2010, it will be interesting to see if more online video companies start turning a profit.

Another critical factor is the emergence of social media as a primary communication vehicle. What most people don’t realize is that Twitter has been part of the mainstream audience for only the past 18 months. With greater social media innovation on the horizon, such platforms are essential for every entertainment provider — regardless of the medium.
