iPad: A different perspective

by Aanarav Sareen on April 27, 2010

The iPad has been available for 3 weeks. It has been received positively by some and negatively by others. However, after spending an extended amount of time with the device, I’m ready to answer the most pressing question — what can it be used for?

In my first review, I made a statement that the device is trying to create a new market — between a laptop and a mobile phone. While that statement still holds true, the main power of the device lies in apps. Without them, it’s just a big iPod touch.

1. Bento for iPad:
By default, the iPad doesn’t have any data collection tools. Bento for iPad bridges that gap, converting your iPad to a roving database. Want to conduct user experience studies? No problem. Design a simple app and you can start collecting data in less than 5 minutes. When you sync your iPad to the computer, the data is transferred over seamlessly. If you intend to use your iPad in the field, this is a must have application. ($4.99)

2. Instapaper:
Instapaper allows users to bookmark pages and then read them offline on the iPad. At less than $5, its a great solution for those who won’t have continuos Internet connection or for those who don’t have the iPad 3G model. The interface is clean and the application strips out ads, allowing for a pleasant reading experience. ($4.99)

3. Apple Pages:
When the iPad was first introduced, Apple announced that its document processing tool would be available for purchase. While the application is in no way a full featured writing tool, it’s a good start and very useful to those who’re looking to write on the device. ($9.99)

4. LogMeIn:
With the iPad, remote access is now possible. Even though there are numerous desktop applications that allow you to remotely access your system, they’re expensive and not very user friendly. However, LogMeIn Ignition makes it possible to access any of your other systems remotely — for a one-time fee of $30.00. Here’s how it works:

  • Install the LogMeIn free application a your computers.
  • Purchase and download LogMeIn Ignition on your iPad.
  • Enter in your username on the iPad application.
  • Access your system.

5. GoodReader:
At less than $1, GoodReader for iPad is a required app. It allows you to read a variety of documents and has the ability to collect documents from multiple places. Want to download your Google Docs? No problem. Want to upload files via the web? No problem. Want to use the iPad to store files? No problem. If you use the iPad for any sort of document consumption, purchase the app today.
