Technology Week: Balsamiq Mockups

Balsamiq Mockups

Today, everyone needs to be a marketer and has to have technology skills that are more than just the browser and the Office suite. This is especially true for those who work in digital media. Not only do you need to create content, you also need to develop technology to publish your content.

Most content creators are not technology developers. However, they’re often times responsible for distributing content. While they can work with developers to come up with an idea, visualizing ideas prior to product launch is a challenge. Wireframing applications aren’t easy. Creating mock-ups aren’t easy.

This is where Balsamiq Mockups comes in. It’s an easy to use wireframing application which can be used to mockup web, desktop and mobile apps.

How it works:

  • Unlike other design or mockup applications, you do not need any drawing skills.
  • The application ships with a wide range of presets that you can customize. Want to create a calendar? Drag and drop the calendar component onto your canvas.
  • Once you’ve created your mockup, you can export it in a number of different ways.

Drawbacks:
The application doesn’t support layers at the moment. If you’re working on a complex application and are used to creating mockups with Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Fireworks, this fact might slow you down.

Price:
Balsamiq Mockups is available for $79.

    Hi there, Aanarav,

Thanks for taking the time to write up your thoughts on our little tool. When you mention “layering,” are you talking about layering UI controls?

    LAYERING UI CONTROLS
You can layer controls as if they were pieces of paper on the mockup canvas. To do so, you select the controls you want to layer and select one of four layering commands available via the Property Inspector: bring to front, send to back, bring forward and send backward.

    Hi Valerie,

Thanks for your note. I meant creating layers that are available in
    Photoshop or Illustrator.

    Thanks,
    Aanarav

We develop apps for the iPhone & iPad and We've been using Balsamiq and have to say it's brilliant! The article states it doesn't have layers yet you don't need them as you link as many screens as you want, I feel you missed an important point Aanarav
