Self Publishing on the Kindle

by Aanarav Sareen on August 16, 2010

As a company, Amazon.com has grown by leaps and bounds. What started as an online bookstore, carries more products than a traditional retailer with far greater convenience and pricing today. It is also no surprise that Amazon has been trying to get into the digital distribution market. It is a lucrative market that has yet to reach its potential. In this post, I’ll highlight how you can publish your content on the Kindle.

Amazon’s Kindle platform is perhaps the most advanced digital publishing text platform. Not because of the Kindle hardware, but because of the content distribution strategy. You can purchase a book on the Kindle store and read it on the Kindle or the iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Android devices. This functionality makes it a no brainer for those looking to make their text content available on multiple devices. Publishing on the Kindle is easy.

  1. Visit dtp.amazon.com
  2. Create an account.
  3. Create a title and make sure that it is formatted as an HTML file.
  4. Preview the HTML file using the Kindle simulator.
  5. Set the price, royalty and availability options.
  6. Publish

That’s it. Within a few hours, your content will be accessible via the Kindle. Before you hit the publish button, please make sure that you preview your HTML file. What may appear properly on your browser may not appear to work on the Kindle.
